Valve and Solenoid Repair

Get to the cause when a zone will not open, will not stop or runs weakly.

Three valve symptoms, three different causes

Every zone in a sprinkler system opens and closes at a valve, usually buried in a green box near the house or along a bed. A valve fails in one of three ways. It will not open, so the zone stays dry. It will not close, so the zone runs on after the controller stops, or never stops at all. Or it weeps, letting a slow trickle reach the lowest head between cycles.

Each has its own suspects. A zone that will not open points to the solenoid, the wire or the controller output. A zone that will not stop often has grit under the diaphragm or a torn seal. EPA WaterSense notes that a valve unable to close fully can seep, and that water pooling between cycles may signal a leak.

Fix the valve, then test the whole station

A repair can be as small as cleaning a diaphragm or as large as cutting in a new valve body. Either way, the work is not done until the station runs from the controller, stops on time and holds dry between cycles. Check the box afterwards: standing water in it means a fitting is still leaking.

Know where to shut water off before a stuck zone floods the yard. In many Glendale homes the irrigation line has its own shutoff at the backflow assembly, separate from the house. A zone valve is not the same part as that backflow assembly, which falls under city permit rules if it has to be replaced. For the step-by-step symptom check, read the valve failure guide, and the Glendale valve page for local notes.

Questions about Valve and Solenoid Repair

A zone that stays dry when called, keeps running after its time, or runs weak can involve the program, the wiring, the solenoid, the diaphragm or a downstream break. EPA WaterSense notes that a valve unable to close fully seeps between cycles. Compare what the controller commands with what the sprinklers do before replacing anything.
