PVC Pipe and Mainline Repair

Cut out a broken length of buried PVC or poly pipe and put the line back under pressure without a second dig.

Mainline or lateral: the timing tells you which pipe broke

An irrigation system has two kinds of pipe. The mainline runs from the supply and backflow assembly to the valves, and it stays under pressure all the time. The laterals run from each valve to its heads, and they hold pressure only while that zone runs. That difference is the best clue to where a break is.

Water that keeps surfacing with the controller off points to the mainline or a valve. Water that appears only during one zone's cycle points to that zone's lateral. A mainline break needs the irrigation supply shut off until it is repaired. A lateral break can usually wait for the zone to be turned off at the controller. Mark the wet area and note which station was running before anyone starts digging.

Cut out the damage, then backfill properly

A typical repair exposes the pipe, cuts out the cracked length and joins new pipe with couplings. Solvent-welded PVC needs its cure time before the line goes back under pressure, and in summer heat that is easy to rush. Poly pipe uses barbed or compression fittings instead.

Backfill matters as much as the joint. Packing rocks against new pipe sets up the next crack. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension notes that caliche layers can stop water from soaking down, so on some Glendale lots a leak spreads sideways along a hard layer and surfaces away from the break. If a repair touches the pipe between the water meter and the backflow assembly, city backflow rules may apply. The Glendale pipe repair page explains which parts the city regulates.

Questions about PVC Pipe and Mainline Repair

Watch the timing. The mainline is under pressure whenever the supply is open, so a mainline break shows as water already standing before any cycle, a meter that turns with everything off, or low pressure on every station. A lateral only carries water while its zone runs, so its break appears during that cycle and dries between them.
