Irrigation System Efficiency Audit

Measure what each zone actually applies before changing hardware or the schedule.

Measure each zone before anything is changed

An irrigation audit answers one question: how much water does each zone really put down, and where? It starts with a walk of every station looking for leaks, broken heads and spray on paving. On turf, catch cans set across the lawn show how evenly the heads cover it and how fast they apply water. On drip, a timed check at a few emitters shows whether they deliver what they should.

The test should run at the hour the zone normally runs. The City of Glendale says pressure depends on which of its four pressure zones a home is in and can dip during the 6 to 8 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. demand peaks, so a mid-day test can flatter a system that struggles at dawn.

The report, and what changes after it

A useful audit ends with a plain written report: each zone, what it waters, how it performed, the faults found, and a starting schedule based on the measurements. It should separate repairs that stop waste from upgrades that are optional, such as new nozzles, a smart controller or a flow sensor.

Some of those upgrades appear on the City of Glendale rebate list for single-family city water customers, and the city requires a system in good working order first, so repairs come before rebates. The city also offers a free landscape consultation and links to the AMWUA water use calculator for its customers. For a self-check between audits, use the Glendale inspection checklist, and see the Glendale audit page for local measurement notes.

Questions about Irrigation System Efficiency Audit

A tune-up adjusts and fixes as it goes: heads are straightened, leaks repaired and the schedule reset in one visit. An audit measures first, with catch cans, a pressure gauge and emitter flow checks, and delivers a written zone table before anything is changed. Choose the audit when nobody can say which zone is wasting water.
